PRODUCING TELEVISION with JOHN MAY and LAURA HARBIN
How to develop, finance and run a successful television production in Canada.
This workshop will guide you through the various stages and challenges of television production from the point of view of producers and showrunners. You will learn valuable lessons about how to develop, finance and run a successful television production.
You will focus on:
-Dramatic television production
-How to come up with a great idea and develop a killer pitch
-The development process: what matters and what does not
-The realities of financing in the Canadian and international scenes
-Principles of storytelling and script development
-The stages of prep and understanding production paperwork

About the instructors: JOHN MAY has written and produced an extensive number of live-action and animated television productions. He is currently producing <<Captain Flamingo>> for YTV, <<Natural Sadie>> for Disney, and a new pilot for Family Channel. Other credits include: <<Our Hero>>, <<The Journey of Alien Strange>>, and <<Screech Owls>>.

LAURA HARBIN is Vice President of Production with Shaftesbury Films. She is also a producer on individual projects and co-produces on all other feature films and television projects by the company. She has produced three series for Shaftesbury, <<Dark Oracle>> (which won an International Emmy in 2005), <<Atwood Stories>>, and <<Shield Stories>>, and is responsible for overseeing all aspects production

LIFESTYLE AND REALITY TELEVISION
Producing shows that rock with ALLAN NOVAK
Reality TV and Lifestyle programs are the hottest things on television. This unique workshop covers the ins and outs of creating, pitching and producing television programming for cable networks and specialty stations.
You will focus on
-The research and intelligence one should gather prior to pitching
-Clever low cost strategies to make your idea stand out
-Self generated pilots and demos, when to do it, and when not
-Who, what and where to go to make your pitch count

About the Instructor: ALLAN NOVAK is an executive producer, director, writer and editor with experience in reality, documentary, and lifestyle television. He has collaborated with most of the top comedy talent in Canada, including Mike Myers, Kids in the Hall and The Second City, and has produced and directed a number of successful shows. His list of shows includes the award-winning series <<Loving Spoonfuls>>, the dating series <<Second Time Around>>, <<The Joe Blow Show>> for Comedy Network and <<The Jokes on Us ? 50 years of CBC Satire>>. Allan is currently working on a number of innovative projects combining comedy, reality television, and the internet.

This comprehensive workshop will explore the role of the producer from the inside-out. You will learn all the steps necessary to produce a feature film and get on the insider track to becoming a successful producer.
You will focus on:
-Developing a project from concept to screen
-Financing and where to get funding
-Working effectively with writers and directors
-Production planning
-What you need to know about marketing and distribution

About the Instructor: PHYLLIS LAING is President and Producer at Buffalo Gals Pictures in Winnipeg. As a producer/executive producer, her many credits include the Guy Maddin feature <<The Saddest Music in the World>> co-produced with Rhombus Media Inc., <<Seven Times Lucky>>, <<Without a Word>>, and she has co-produced with Muse Entertainment on <<Niagara Motel>>, and <<The Law of Enclosures>> with Pluck Inc. Her feature documentary, <<Gabrielle Roy>> won the Telefilm Canada award for Best Canadian Work at the Montreal International Film Festival, and Best Documentary honours at the Prix Gemeaux and the Banff V Festival. Phyllis recently completed three years as Chair on the Manitoba Motion picture Industry Association board of Directors.
