Posted January 1st, 2009: MFG member and co-founder Ezra Soiferman writes: A 3-minute film I made called Broadway New Year's Day (in which I walk the entire 252-block length of New York's Broadway turning it into a musical 'stop-motion documentary') has launched today on eGuiders.com. The brand new L.A-based eGuiders site describes itself as "a video website that uses a remarkable collection of industry insiders and pioneers to help people find the most engaging original videos on the Internet. We search, you watch." My old NYU classmate and friend Marc Ostrick (co-creator of our award-winning short film Pressure Drop) is one of the two founders of eGuiders and I'm very excited for him on the recent launch of this phenomenal new site. While it's still in 'Beta-test' form, eGuiders.com already has tons of web videos up with more coming soon. If you like short films and web videos, jump aboard the eGuiders Newsletter List to get updates on new content at the site. Many celebrities and TV industry folks like my NYU friend Damon Lindelof (co-creator of ABC's "LOST") will be featured at the site e-guiding you to their favourite web video picks. Others are: Jerry Stiller, Shawn Ryan (writer, The Shield), John Landis (director, Blues Brothers) and many more. I'm happy to point out that this is Broadway New Year's Day's online premiere. I've only ever shown it at live speaking engagements to illustrate taking wild ideas (like walking Broadway top to bottom fueled only by orange juice and sesame seed bagels) and running with them! Have a super-fine '09! Enjoy my walk down Broadway... Turn the speakers up and enjoy the trip! To watch Broadway New Year's Day, click here.

We were recently honored with a Canadian New Media Award or our work. This week, we are launching our first funding drive, with special gifts offered by EyeSteelFilm. We founded this website 5 years ago with funding from the Canadian government, but sadly our pilot program has run out and we are starting a drive to become self-sustainable. That means we need donations to survive! We now have over 3700 members, and would like to continue growing and providing this service. We are trying to raise $5000 dollars this holiday season to keep alive. YOUR DONATION WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Any donation is helpful. All the money raised goes to this website and services. Most of HomelessNation.org's staff are people from the street community. Office space is donated. Administration is volunteered. We are a not-for-profit. We make do on a very small budget. More info and list of cool gifts you'll get in exchange for your donation.

Posted November 25th, 2008: McGill University will host a free one night-only exhibit on Tuesday, December 2 to showcase short films made by the students of Professor Alanna Thain's Alternative Approaches to Media class. The seventeen young filmmakers will be on site in the Arts building to present their course capstone projects, answer questions and give hands-on lessons in animation. There will be an open house to display installation pieces, followed by a two-hour screening. Seating for the screening is limited and will be allotted on a first-come first-serve basis. The works to be shown address fundamental questions about film as a medium in 2008, speaking collectively to themes of the digital age: the democratization of media, the prevalence of the small screen, and the communication networks by which they have been made possible. Throughout the semester, the students experimented with a variety of techniques and materials including stop-motion animation, found footage remixing, and Super 8 film. Several works from the class were chosen to compete as finalists in the Festival de Nouveau Cinema's Concours Fantôme this past October. Event begins at 6:30pm. Cost of admission: Free. McGill Arts Building, 853 Sherbrooke St. West.

Posted November 2nd, 2008: The MediaWorkshop at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts is offering two evening workshops for filmmakers or anyone who has an interest in learning more about the skills behind the art of cinema! THE ART OF THE INTERVIEW: Now that everybody seems to have their own talk show, the fine art of interviewing is often sacrificed for hype, and the real skill of interviewing suffers. But the interview is paramount to developing and exploring great characters. This interactive evening workshop highlights the essential requirements of interviewing and the verbal and emotional tools required to gather and communicate vital information in documentary filmmaking. Monday, Nov. 10th, 6:00pm – 9:00pm in the Segal Centre’s CinemaSpace, $35.00+tax. THE ART OF THE PITCH: It’s got great characters and plots, it’ll make you laugh and cry - it's everything you want in a TV show. Problem is, it's stuck in your head. Selling your show is not only the first step in bringing your vision to life, it's the essential step. What are networks looking for? How should a pitch be structured? When's the best time to pitch? This pitch class will help clarify your idea and take it from seed to sale. Monday, November 24th, 6:00pm – 9:00pm in the Segal Centre’s CinemaSpace, $35.00+tax. Courses given by producer/director and MFG member Evan Beloff. As always, we welcome any ideas for future workshops.
