Arid Sea Films is looking to fill crew positions for the upcoming production of a short drama entitled RYE N COKE by director Adam Budd. Rye N Coke is a story of a young soldier from a small town as he begins to realize the impact of his choices and the emotional pull of the people closest to him. The film is financed by the Canada Council for the Arts, SODEC (Jeunes créateurs), and will be broadcast on CBC Television (Canadian Reflections). The following positions are available: Craft Person (4 days approximately), must have a valid Class 5 driver's license; Key Grip (8 days approximately); Best Boy Grip (8 days approximately); Swing Grip (2 days approximately); The film will be shot in the Montreal area between the dates of January 6-20th. Showtimes are 1:10, 4:10, 7:10, and 10:10 each day. Like any indie film, it'll live or die based on its first weekend, and I'm hoping to get enough people out this weekend to elicit a second week. • Posted December 7th, 2011: MFG member Alex Epstein writes: "What Do I Want In My Contract? A WGC Panel Discussion. What should you ask for when you option a feature film or a TV series? The Writers Guild's basic contract (the Independent Producer Agreement) covers many basic terms, but others aren't codified, including lots of ways veteran writers get paid on the back end, your right to write new material, and the crucial "Created by" credit in TV. Plus, what's all this fine print? We've invited an agent who reps writers to talk about what writers can and should ask for; a producer's lawyer to talk about what's easy for producers to give and what's hard; and a representative of the Writers Guild of Canada to talk about what contract terms end up in disputes. The panel will be moderated by Alex Epstein, who's worked both sides of the table. Audience members will be able to ask questions. This event is aimed at professional, emerging and aspiring screenwriters, but filmmakers of all kinds may find it illuminating. The panel discussion will start at 7 pm sharp. For the 14th edition, the RIDM has reorganized its sections, the better to bring the year's finest documentaries and works by new Canadian and international talents to Montreal audiences. The 115 films programmed this year will be presented in three main sections: the Official Competition, Panorama and Retrospectives. The Official Competition includes the International Feature Competition, the Canadian Feature Competition and the International Short and Medium-length Competition. The non-competitive Panorama section presents a selection of the year's major films, and includes four sub-sections: Special Presentations, showcasing the latest films by leading documentary filmmakers and the year's most acclaimed films on the festival circuit; Horizons, which includes works documenting the world's tumultuous events; Against the Grain, showcasing bold films on the frontiers of popular and underground culture; and EcoCamera, a selection of films with environmental themes. Lastly, the Retrospectives section gives audiences the opportunity to (re)discover the work of three major filmmakers. RIDM will have the honour of opening the festival with Crazy Horse, the latest film by the distinguished American director Frederick Wiseman. The festival will close with Tahrir, Place de la Libération, by Italian filmmaker Stefano Savona. The first film, On the male side of middle (12:00) about a female-to-male trans Mennonite, has been doing exceptionally well, and will be used in various institutions and workshops educating people on sexual orientation and gender identity issues."
